US cold-rolled coil (CRC) imports totaled 67,761 metric tons in August 2026, up 21.3% from the previous month and 3.5% from a year earlier, according to SteelOrbis, citing preliminary US Department of Commerce census data. The value of imports was $58.6 million.
The difference between the monthly and annual growth rates is central to interpreting the figures. August recorded a substantial increase over the preceding month, while the comparison with the same month a year earlier showed a more modest expansion. The figures establish an increase in import arrivals, but do not by themselves demonstrate a sustained acceleration in demand.
For buyers and distributors, the immediate question is how the additional imported volume is absorbed. If arrivals outpace consumption, they could add to available inventories and affect purchasing schedules. If they are absorbed quickly, the effect on availability could be limited. Import volume alone does not establish either outcome or indicate a clear direction for CRC prices.
Subsequent monthly import figures and any revisions to the preliminary August data will help show whether the increase persists. The reported import value also lacks a comparative growth rate, so it does not establish whether spending rose in line with tonnage or whether average import values changed.
