China’s output of pig iron, crude steel and finished steel declined by 2.9% year on year in January–September 2026, according to GMK Center. The reported decline narrowed by 0.2 percentage points compared with January–August.
The narrower cumulative decline indicates an improvement in the year-on-year comparison, while output remained below the corresponding period of the previous year. It does not, by itself, establish that production increased from August to September or that a sustained recovery is underway.
For steel buyers and suppliers, the distinction matters: a smaller production decline does not automatically translate into greater material availability or a change in prices. Those effects would depend on how output compares with demand and inventories. The reported figures alone do not establish tighter supply or stronger consumption.
Subsequent production figures will help show whether the narrowing decline persists. Separate results for pig iron, crude steel and finished steel would also help clarify how the trend differs across production stages.
