Steel inventories held at sampled mills across major regions nationwide totaled 5.7016 million tonnes on October 21, 2026, according to monitoring data from Lange Steel. Stocks fell by 70,800 tonnes from the previous week, a decline of 1.23%.
The continued inventory decline points to some easing of stock pressure at mills and is consistent with an improvement in shipments. It offers a tentative signal that the balance between supply and demand is improving.
However, mill inventories reflect the balance between steel entering storage and steel leaving it. A decline can result from stronger shipments, lower production, or a combination of both. The inventory movement alone therefore does not establish how much end-user demand has strengthened, nor does it demonstrate a broader market recovery.
For mills, sustained stock reductions could ease the pressure to clear material. For buyers, the more useful signal will be whether further inventory declines coincide with steady shipments and changes in production. Tracking those measures alongside stocks held elsewhere in the supply chain would help distinguish stronger consumption from a transfer of inventory beyond the mill gate.
